Shipping

Check addresses, quote rates, buy labels and track parcels through Shippo: test in the preview for free, then connect your own Shippo account to buy real labels.

Shipping is built into Floot. Ask your assistant for shipping rates at checkout, a button that prints a label, or a tracking page, and it is wired in through Shippo, with no Shippo keys or webhooks to set up. You can try it all in the preview without a Shippo account, and connect your own when you are ready to ship for real.

Test shipping and real shipping

The preview and your published app ship in different modes. Your app's code is the same in both:

Add shipping

  1. 1

    Ask your assistant

Describe what should happen to an order. Tell it the address you ship from and the usual size and weight of a parcel:

Add shipping to my store. Check the customer's address, show rates at checkout and let them pick one. I ship from 123 Main St, Austin TX 78701, in 10×8×4 inch boxes of about 2 lb.
Add an orders page for me where I can buy and print a label for each paid order, and email the customer their tracking link.
  2. 2

    Test it in the preview

Try the whole flow in the preview: enter an address, get rates, buy a label and open it. Rates and labels there are samples, nothing is bought and no Shippo account is needed. You do not need to publish first.

  3. 3

    Connect Shippo

When you are ready to ship for real, click Login Shippo on the Publish screen and sign in to your Shippo account, or create one. Only the project owner can connect Shippo; if a collaborator publishes first, the Publish screen asks them to have the owner do it.

  4. 4

    Publish

Publish the app. From then on, rates are real, every label your app buys is bought on your Shippo account, and tracking updates arrive as carriers scan each parcel.

What you can build

  • Address checks: catch a typo in an address before you quote or ship, and use the corrected address.
  • Rates at checkout: show carriers, services, prices and delivery estimates, and let the customer pick one. Pair it with Payments to charge for shipping.
  • Labels: buy a label once an order is paid, or from an admin page, as a PDF, a 4×6 PDF for label printers, a PNG or ZPL.
  • International shipping: customs declarations and commercial invoices for parcels that cross a border.
  • Tracking: a tracking page for each order, and actions when a parcel moves, such as emailing the customer or marking the order shipped.
  • Voiding labels: cancel a label bought by mistake and not used.

A few prompts to start from:

When a customer pays, buy the cheapest USPS label for their order and show me the label to print on the order page.
Add a tracking page for each order that shows where the parcel is and when it should arrive. Email the customer when it is delivered.
Let me ship to Canada and the UK. Fill in the customs form from the products in the order.

Emailing your customers

Shipping confirmations and tracking emails that your app sends go only to you until your workspace has a verified sending domain. See Email.

Your Shippo account

  • One account for all your projects. Your Shippo account is connected to your Floot account, so every project you own buys real labels on the same Shippo account.
  • Shippo bills you for labels. Labels are paid for on your Shippo account, under Shippo's terms. Floot charges nothing for labels or shipping calls.
  • Refunds go through Shippo. Voiding an unused label from your app asks Shippo for a refund, which Shippo handles under its terms.
  • You are the shipper. Addresses, weights, packaging, carrier rules and claims are between you, your customer and the carrier.
  • If your Shippo sign-in expires, the published app cannot buy labels until you click Login Shippo on the Publish screen and sign in again.

Turning shipping off

If publishing asks for Shippo and your app no longer ships anything through Floot, click Turn off shipping on the Publish screen, or ask your assistant to turn shipping off. Publishing then no longer needs a Shippo account. Your app's data and your Shippo connection are kept, so you can turn shipping back on later.

Already using your own Shippo key?

Apps that call Shippo directly with their own API key keep working that way. See Connecting external services.
